Karatag: Three Lakes
Timur-Dara, Payron and Juvazak — a four-day trek through the Karatag Gorge, camping by the water.
About This Tour
The Karatag Gorge lies on the southern slopes of the Hissar Range, a couple of hours' drive from Dushanbe. It's one of the greenest mountain areas in the country: wild fruit trees grow in the lower valley, juniper forests higher up. The Karatag River runs through the gorge, and is known for its trout.
The route takes in three mountain lakes. Timur-Dara sits at around 1,970 metres — a landslide-dammed lake held between rock slopes. Payron lies further up the valley, surrounded by forest. Juvazak is the most secluded of the three.
This is proper trekking: the road ends at the village of Hakimi, and from there it's on foot. You sleep in tents by the water. Donkeys carry the equipment and supplies, so you only need to carry your personal things. We set up camp and prepare the meals, so you can simply enjoy the journey. There's no phone signal on the route.
Tour Programme
1Up to Timur-Dara
Departure from Dushanbe to the trailhead in the Karatag Gorge, then the climb along the river. Timur-Dara sits in a granite basin, its water a deep blue. First night camping by the lake.
2On to Payron
Across the plateau with views of the Hissar Range. Payron is surrounded by emerald-green water and dense forest. Camp under the junipers.
3Juvazak
A day hike to the third lake, carrying only what you need. Juvazak is the wildest spot on the route. Back to camp at Payron, evening by the fire.
4The descent
An unhurried walk down the valley. Lunch of local trout at a guesthouse, then the drive back to Dushanbe.
